The Kogi State Police Command has commenced a sweeping statewide operation aimed at tackling banditry and violent crimes, with tactical units deployed to identified flashpoints across the state.

The renewed security push follows directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, as part of efforts to strengthen internal security and dismantle criminal networks.

Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, disclosed that the Command has mapped out suspected hideouts and supply routes used by criminal elements, leading to the strategic deployment of coordinated tactical teams to disrupt their activities.

He noted that officers have been positioned across the three senatorial districts to ensure sustained visibility policing, particularly in areas considered vulnerable to attacks.

According to the Command, intelligence gathering has been significantly enhanced, with specialised units tasked with generating actionable information to support proactive interventions. This includes intensified stop-and-search operations and covert surveillance in high-risk locations.

To improve operational efficiency, the police are working in close collaboration with other security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian military. Joint patrols and regular coordination meetings have been instituted to strengthen information sharing and ensure swift response to emerging threats.

The Command also said it has deepened engagement with traditional rulers, community leaders, and local government authorities as part of efforts to reinforce community-based security structures. Residents were urged to support ongoing operations by providing credible and timely intelligence.

All specialised units of the force, including the Police Mobile Force, Special Protection Unit, and Counter Terrorism Unit, have been placed on red alert. These units are currently conducting round-the-clock patrols covering forests, farmlands, border communities, worship centres, and other public spaces.

The Commissioner emphasised that strict supervision has been mandated for all operational teams, with senior officers tasked to ensure discipline, professionalism, and effectiveness in the field. He added that the Command has instituted a system of hourly situation reports to maintain real-time awareness of security developments across the state.

Kankarofi warned that any lapses in duty or oversight would attract disciplinary action, stressing the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on negligence.

Reassuring residents of the police’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the Commissioner called for vigilance and cooperation from the public. He encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities through designated emergency lines provided by the Command.

The statement, issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to sustain intelligence-led policing and rid the state of criminal elements through coordinated security operations.
