Workers’ Day 2026: Kogi NLC Praises Ododo on Workers’ Welfare, Seeks Key Reforms
Kogi NLC Chairman Amari Gabriel commends Governor Ahmed Ododo on workers’ welfare during Workers’ Day 2026, while calling for reforms including reinstatement of civil servants and improved social services.

The (NLC) in Kogi State has applauded Governor for promoting industrial peace and prioritising the welfare of workers, even as it pressed for urgent reforms to address lingering challenges in the public service.
Speaking at the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration in Lokoja, the state NLC Chairman, , acknowledged strides made by the administration, including regular payment of salaries, harmonisation of pensions, cash-backing of promotions, and ongoing infrastructural development across the state.
He, however, noted that issues such as insecurity and rising poverty levels continue to threaten decent work and the wellbeing of workers, stressing the need for more comprehensive interventions.
Among key demands raised by organised labour were the reinstatement of 441 civil servants earlier cleared of allegations, strategic recruitment into critical sectors, and improvements in healthcare and education systems. Gabriel also urged the government to clear outstanding gratuities owed to retirees.
The labour leader further called for expanded access to affordable housing, improved mass transit systems, provision of potable water, and the restoration of full trade union rights in tertiary institutions.
Despite the concerns, he reaffirmed labour’s commitment to working with the government to advance development in the state.
“We remain partners in progress and will continue to collaborate with government in the interest of workers and the overall growth of Kogi State,” he said, while urging workers to remain committed to productivity and professionalism.
In his response, Governor Ododo, represented by his deputy, , commended workers for their resilience and contributions to the state’s stability and growth.
Describing himself as a “co-worker,” the governor said he is fully aware of the challenges faced by civil servants and remains committed to policies that prioritise their welfare.
He highlighted ongoing reforms within the civil service aimed at building a more efficient, competent, and innovation-driven workforce capable of meeting the demands of modern governance.
According to him, consistent salary and pension payments, timely promotions, and support for retirees through gratuity payments remain central to his administration’s agenda.
The governor added that sustained engagement with labour unions has helped maintain industrial harmony, while capacity-building initiatives are being implemented to enhance workforce productivity.
The 2026 Workers’ Day celebration in Kogi State brought together government officials, labour leaders, and workers from across sectors, reinforcing calls for stronger collaboration toward improved welfare and sustainable development.
