WoPU Urges Government to Introduce Relief Measures Amid Rising Fuel Costs

The (WoPU), a pro-good governance movement advocating the re-election of , has called on federal and state governments to urgently introduce temporary relief measures to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices on Nigerian workers and the general public.

In a statement issued by its Interim National Coordinator, , the group said the recent surge in fuel prices—linked partly to geopolitical tensions in the —has placed additional economic pressure on millions of Nigerians.

WoPU noted that the increase in petrol costs has led to a sharp rise in transportation fares and the prices of essential goods and services, further straining the finances of households and workers across the country.

The group stressed that the current situation demands proactive intervention from government at all levels to protect the welfare and economic stability of ordinary citizens.

As part of its recommendations, WoPU urged the federal and state governments to introduce free transportation services for workers in major cities, similar to initiatives previously implemented by the and those often provided during festive seasons.

According to the group, such an initiative would significantly reduce the transportation burden on workers who rely on daily commuting to their places of employment.

Akporeha further suggested that governments could collaborate with transport unions and licensed transport companies to provide subsidized transportation services for Nigerians until global economic conditions stabilize and fuel prices moderate.

“The government can work with transport unions and credible transport companies to provide cheaper transportation options for Nigerians during this difficult period,” he said.

The organization also called on governments to engage employers in both the public and private sectors to develop supportive policies that would assist workers coping with the rising cost of living and transportation.

In addition, WoPU urged authorities to take steps to ensure that essential commodities are made available to citizens at reduced and controlled prices, particularly during the current period of economic strain.

The group noted that strategic interventions in food supply chains and other basic necessities would help ease pressure on households and prevent further economic hardship.

WoPU also appealed to President Tinubu to sustain what it described as his responsive and compassionate leadership by acting swiftly to shield Nigerian workers and citizens from the full impact of global economic disruptions.

While reiterating its support for the President’s leadership and re-election bid, the organization pledged to continue advocating policies that promote the welfare, dignity, and economic security of Nigerian workers.

“We remain committed to supporting initiatives that protect the interests of working people and the broader Nigerian populace,” Akporeha said.
