Otunba-Mayegun Duro Olusegun Aseremaseka and hundreds of supporters have joined the APC in Ijumu LGA, citing grassroots development and empowerment initiatives championed by Rt. Hon. Leke Abejide as key factors behind their decision

The political landscape in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State received a boost following the defection of prominent community leader and politician, Otunba-Mayegun Duro Olusegun Aseremaseka, alongside hundreds of his supporters and political associates, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development, which drew a large gathering of party leaders, stakeholders, youth groups, women associations, and residents from Iyamoye, Igbopin, and Okealuju Ward, was described by participants as a significant addition to the ruling party’s growing support base within the area.
Speaking during the event, Aseremaseka said his decision to align with the APC was informed by his conviction in the party’s progressive ideals and commitment to sustainable development. He noted that the achievements recorded by the APC-led administration, as well as the visible impact of some of its elected representatives at the grassroots, played a major role in influencing his political move.
According to him, the decision was reached after consultations with his supporters and political associates, who unanimously agreed to identify with a platform they believe offers greater opportunities for community development and inclusive governance.
The former political leader also pledged the loyalty and support of his political structure to the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing confidence in the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and its capacity to deliver long-term benefits for Nigerians.
Aseremaseka reserved special commendation for the member representing Yagba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Leke Joseph Abejide, whom he described as a leader whose contributions to human capital development and community empowerment have earned widespread admiration across Kogi West.
He praised Abejide’s sustained investment in educational support programmes, youth empowerment initiatives, and community-based interventions, noting that the lawmaker’s approach to representation has positively impacted numerous lives and strengthened public confidence in democratic governance.
According to him, Abejide’s commitment to grassroots development has continued to attract support across political and social divides, while inspiring greater participation in the political process.
The event also featured an empowerment programme sponsored by Abejide, during which beneficiaries received financial assistance and food items as part of efforts aimed at improving livelihoods and rewarding loyal supporters across the communities.
Party leaders who addressed the gathering welcomed the new entrants into the APC fold and expressed optimism that the defection would further consolidate the party’s structure in Ijumu Local Government Area ahead of future political contests.
They urged both old and new members to remain united and committed to the collective objective of advancing development within the state and strengthening the party’s electoral fortunes.
The ceremony ended with renewed calls for peaceful political engagement, party cohesion, and sustained support for initiatives aimed at promoting growth and development in Kogi State and the country at large.
