Niger Delta Security: Stakeholders Applaud Tinubu, Ribadu Over Gains in Oil Theft Fight

Forum cites 80% drop in oil infrastructure breaches, improved stability in Niger Delta

The Niger Delta Stakeholders Forum (NDSF) has commended President and the National Security Adviser, , for what it described as significant progress in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, particularly in the Niger Delta region.

In a statement titled “The Silent Wins of Nigeria’s National Security Architecture and the Task Ahead,” the group highlighted measurable improvements in regional security, including a substantial reduction in crude oil theft and increased stability in oil-producing communities.

The statement, jointly signed by Barrister Andrew Mene (Chairman), Chief Rowland Abarasi Tamunopiri (Secretary), and Chief Umukoro Joseph Erhimeyoma (Publicity Secretary), noted that coordinated efforts under the current administration have yielded notable results between May 2023 and January 2026.

According to the forum, security breaches affecting onshore oil infrastructure have declined by as much as 80 per cent within the period under review. It added that the development has created a more conducive environment for oil and gas operations, leading to improved national production levels and renewed investor confidence.

The group attributed the gains to improved coordination among security agencies, enhanced collaboration between the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Ministry of Defence, and service chiefs, as well as the deployment of modern technology and intelligence systems.

It further noted that the adoption of a community-based approach to security, involving local stakeholders and private surveillance operators, has played a critical role in curbing illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalism across the region.

“The cohesion among security agencies and alignment of strategy at the highest levels of government have significantly strengthened Nigeria’s response to evolving threats,” the statement said.

The forum also highlighted the socio-economic impact of the improved security situation, noting that job creation, community development initiatives, and environmental management efforts are gradually taking shape across the Niger Delta.

It recalled that early actions by the National Security Adviser, including a strategic visit to the region and subsequent restructuring of the security framework, were pivotal in addressing long-standing challenges in the oil and gas sector.

While acknowledging the progress made, the NDSF stressed that more work remains to be done, particularly in addressing emerging security concerns in other parts of the country.

The group, however, expressed optimism that sustained implementation of current strategies, combined with continued stakeholder support, would consolidate the gains and further enhance national security.
