World Sickle Cell Day: Governor Ododo Approves Free Health Insurance Coverage for Sickle Cell Warriors in Kogi

As the world commemorates World Sickle Cell Day, Kogi State Governor, His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, FCA, has approved free health insurance coverage for persons living with sickle cell disorder across the state.
The landmark intervention is aimed at easing the financial burden associated with the management of sickle cell disease and improving access to quality healthcare services for affected individuals, popularly known as Sickle Cell Warriors.
Governor Ododo said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to building a healthier society where vulnerable citizens receive the care and support they deserve. He noted that sickle cell disorder remains a major public health challenge and called for greater awareness, early diagnosis, proper management and collective support for those living with the condition.
The Governor stressed that no citizen should be denied access to healthcare because of financial constraints, assuring that his administration will continue to prioritize policies and programmes that promote the wellbeing of the people.
Under the free health insurance scheme, enrolled beneficiaries will have access to a range of healthcare services through accredited healthcare facilities across the state, thereby reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses and improving health outcomes.
Governor Ododo commended parents, caregivers, healthcare professionals, advocacy groups and development partners working tirelessly to support individuals living with sickle cell disorder. He urged residents to embrace genotype testing and genetic counselling as critical tools for preventing the spread of the disease.
The Kogi State Government reiterates its commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector and ensuring that every resident has access to affordable and quality healthcare services in line with the administration’s people-centred development agenda.
As the state joins the global community in marking World Sickle Cell Day, Governor Ododo reassures Sickle Cell Warriors that they are not alone, and that his administration will continue to stand with them through policies and programmes that enhance their quality of life.
