Students of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Okene, on Sunday celebrated the installation of a free campus-wide Wi-Fi network facilitated by the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Senator Natasha Hadiza Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing the initiative as a major step toward improving digital learning and academic excellence.
The internet connectivity project is the latest in a series of constituency interventions by the lawmaker aimed at expanding educational opportunities and promoting technology-driven development across Kogi Central.
The intervention follows the recent launch of the “Growing Kogi Central, Building Our Future” 10,000 Economic Trees Project, an initiative designed to promote environmental sustainability, address climate change and create long-term economic opportunities for residents of the district.
The newly installed Wi-Fi facility is expected to provide students with unrestricted access to digital learning resources, online research materials, virtual classrooms and other educational platforms, significantly enhancing teaching, learning and innovation within the institution.
Speaking after the project’s completion, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan said education remains one of the most valuable investments any society can make, stressing that reliable internet access has become an indispensable tool for learning, research, innovation and economic empowerment.
She noted that the initiative was designed to eliminate barriers that limit access to knowledge and digital opportunities, while equipping students with the skills needed to compete in today’s technology-driven global economy.
According to the senator, improved internet connectivity would expose students to international educational resources, online certification programmes, artificial intelligence applications, software development, entrepreneurship training and remote employment opportunities.
She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting initiatives that empower young people, improve educational outcomes and prepare them for future careers in the digital economy.
The development was warmly received by students, many of whom described the project as one of the most impactful educational interventions in recent years.
They said the availability of free internet access would substantially reduce the financial burden associated with purchasing mobile data while improving access to digital libraries, academic journals, online courses and research materials.
Some of the students also expressed optimism that the facility would encourage innovation, strengthen participation in virtual learning, support technology-driven entrepreneurship and enable them to acquire globally relevant digital skills.
Education stakeholders equally commended the initiative, noting that dependable internet connectivity has become an essential component of modern higher education, facilitating research, academic collaboration, digital inclusion and knowledge sharing.
They observed that investments in digital infrastructure remain critical to improving the quality of tertiary education and preparing students for emerging opportunities in an increasingly technology-driven world.
The free campus-wide Wi-Fi project further underscores Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s focus on youth development, educational advancement, digital inclusion, environmental sustainability and economic empowerment through practical constituency interventions.
With the successful deployment of the internet facility at the Federal College of Education, Okene, students and residents have expressed hope that similar projects will be replicated across other tertiary institutions in Kogi Central, positioning the district as a growing hub for digital education, innovation and knowledge-based development.
