LOKOJA, Kogi State
The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) has confirmed the official results of the local government council elections held across the state on Saturday, October 17, 2026, and congratulated candidates returned by the authorised electoral officers.
The Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Mamman Nda Eri, announced the development in a statewide broadcast delivered on Sunday, October 18, saying KOSIEC had received and verified the official returns submitted by the duly authorised Returning Officers from the state’s 21 local government areas and 239 electoral wards.
The elections were conducted to select chairmen and councillors who will administer the local government councils and represent residents at the grassroots level.
According to Eri, the consolidated results reflect the figures officially declared by the authorised Returning Officers after voting, counting and collation had been concluded at the designated centres.
He said the Commission had fulfilled its responsibility of receiving and verifying the returns before confirming the successful candidates in accordance with applicable electoral laws and guidelines.
The detailed results, including the names of successful candidates, their political parties, local government areas and electoral wards, will be made available through KOSIEC’s official communication channels.
KOSIEC Reaffirms Commitment to Electoral Integrity
In the broadcast, the KOSIEC chairman said the Commission approached the electoral process with the principle that the will of the electorate, freely expressed through the ballot, must be respected.
He explained that the responsibility of an electoral management body was not to determine electoral winners or losers but to provide a fair, transparent and credible process through which citizens could make their choices.
Eri described the election as another important stage in Kogi State’s democratic development, particularly in strengthening grassroots governance and bringing public administration closer to the people.
He maintained that the Commission remained committed to protecting the integrity of the electoral process and consolidating the foundations of democracy at the local government level.
Eri Charges Winners on Accountability, Service
Congratulating the successful candidates, Eri reminded them that electoral victory should be regarded as a responsibility to serve rather than merely an occasion for political celebration.
He said the electorate had entrusted them with their hopes, expectations and aspirations, urging them to demonstrate humility, fairness, accountability and a genuine commitment to public welfare in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The chairman stressed that the confidence placed in elected officials should translate into responsive leadership and practical efforts to improve the lives of residents across the state’s communities.
He also urged the successful candidates to recognise the expectations attached to their new positions and work towards strengthening local government administration.
Message to Unsuccessful Candidates
Eri commended candidates who did not emerge victorious for their participation in the electoral process, noting that their involvement remained part of the democratic contest.
He said democracy was sustained not only when candidates won elections but also when participants respected established rules, accepted legitimate outcomes and pursued grievances through lawful channels.
The KOSIEC chairman encouraged all contestants and their supporters to maintain peace and exercise restraint following the announcement of the results.
He further called on political leaders and citizens across the state to remain law-abiding and united, irrespective of their political affiliations.
KOSIEC Appreciates Ododo, Security Agencies, Stakeholders
The Commission expressed appreciation to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for providing the institutional support that enabled it to carry out its statutory responsibilities.
Eri also acknowledged the contributions of security agencies, political parties, candidates, election observers, civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders, the media and other stakeholders involved in the electoral exercise.
He reserved special commendation for KOSIEC’s management, commissioners, electoral officers, returning officers, presiding officers, ad hoc staff and other personnel, praising their dedication and sacrifices throughout the process.
The chairman equally thanked the people of Kogi State for exercising their democratic rights and participating in the election.
Chairman Calls for Peace, Unity After Election
As the electoral exercise concluded, Eri called on residents, political leaders and party supporters to preserve the peace and unity of the state.
He emphasised that elections should not be treated as battles between enemies but as democratic contests among citizens who share a common future.
According to him, although political parties may differ in ideology and approach, their collective responsibility remains the peace, unity and development of Kogi State.
He noted that the election had produced representatives, but the more important task ahead was to build stronger communities, improve public welfare and advance development across the state.
Eri reiterated that KOSIEC would continue to work towards safeguarding electoral integrity and strengthening grassroots democracy.
He concluded by calling for continued cooperation among political actors and citizens, while praying for the progress of Kogi State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
