Auchi College Reborn as 1991 Alumni Complete Massive Upgrade Ahead of April 6 Commissioning

1991 alumni transform Auchi College with multi-billion naira upgrade as Governor Okpebholo set for commissioning

The Association of Great Achievers, Class of 1991, Auchi College, has completed over 90 per cent of an extensive construction, rehabilitation, and beautification project aimed at restoring the institution’s former glory and improving learning conditions for students and staff.

Led by oil and gas entrepreneur, Mr. Peter Omoh Dunia, popularly known as Peter Black, the alumni group embarked on the intervention following concerns over the deteriorating state of infrastructure in the school. The project is scheduled for commissioning by Edo State Governor, Mr. Monday Okpebholo, on April 6, 2026.

The intervention, described as a multi-billion naira initiative, covers a wide range of modern facilities designed to meet international standards. These include a state-of-the-art ICT/CBT centre equipped with 320 computers and a digital library, fully equipped science laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, as well as a modern sports complex featuring a synthetic football pitch.

Other infrastructure delivered under the project include newly constructed internal roads, functional drainage systems, perimeter fencing for improved security, a modern gatehouse, and solar-powered water supply systems with a 10,000-litre capacity. The school also now boasts solar-powered CCTV surveillance cameras and street lighting to enhance safety and visibility within the compound.

In addition, the alumni completed and renovated key administrative and academic structures, including a 1,000-capacity event centre, a modern administrative block, a multipurpose hall, and newly furnished classrooms equipped with contemporary teaching aids. Facilities such as a home economics laboratory, cafeteria, sickbay, and accommodation for corps members were also provided.

Speaking during a guided tour of the facilities, the Principal of the Senior School, Mrs. Adam Obetaru-Jato, described the transformation as unprecedented in the history of the college. She recalled the poor condition of the school prior to the intervention, noting that many structures were dilapidated, with students and staff exposed to harsh conditions, especially during rainfall.

“This transformation is remarkable. When I resumed in 2024, the school was in a deplorable state, with collapsed structures and an unsafe environment. Today, we are witnessing a complete turnaround, and we are deeply grateful to the Class of ’91 for this intervention,” she said.

Also speaking, the Project Engineer, Mr. Kenneth Asekome, recounted the initial state of the institution, describing it as severely deteriorated when the alumni leader visited in 2024. He noted that the visit inspired the mobilization of the 1991 set to undertake the comprehensive renovation project.

According to him, work commenced almost immediately after the decision was taken, with sustained efforts to ensure timely completion. He, however, advised that proper maintenance structures be put in place to preserve the facilities and prevent a relapse into decay.

A member of the Board of Trustees of the association, Mr. Dairo Samuel, stated that the projects were carefully designed and executed to meet both national and international standards. He added that the facilities, particularly the sports complex, align with Edo State’s reputation in sports development and youth engagement.

Community members, including women and youth leaders, also commended the alumni for what they described as a timely intervention. They noted that the school had long suffered neglect, forcing students to learn under difficult conditions.

“With what we have seen today, this school has been given a new life. We appreciate the efforts of our son, Mr. Peter Dunia, and his classmates for their commitment to the development of this community,” said Mrs. Grace Agatu, a community leader.

With final finishing works nearing completion, preparations are in top gear for the commissioning ceremony, which is expected to attract government officials, business leaders, and stakeholders from within and outside Edo State.
