ADC Slams INEC Over Appeal Court Interpretation, Alleges Political Interference and Bias

ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has openly challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its interpretation of a recent Court of Appeal judgment, accusing the electoral body of compromising its neutrality under alleged political pressure.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party expressed strong dissatisfaction with INEC’s position, describing it as inconsistent with the facts of the case and suggestive of external influence.

The party argued that its growing political relevance has unsettled the ruling establishment, leading to what it described as attempts to weaken opposition voices through institutional means. It maintained that INEC’s stance on the appellate court decision does not reflect a fair or objective reading of the judgment.

“We do not accept the interpretation offered by INEC. It is evident to us that the commission is acting under pressure from forces uncomfortable with the rising profile of our party,” the statement noted.

ADC further alleged that the electoral umpire’s response contains contradictions that undermine its credibility as an impartial referee in Nigeria’s democratic process. The party warned that such actions could erode public trust in electoral institutions if not addressed.

According to the statement, the commission’s position appears to align more with government interests than with its constitutional responsibility to remain neutral and independent.

The party, however, indicated that it is weighing its options and would soon announce its next line of action regarding the matter.

“We are carefully reviewing the situation and will, in due course, make our position known. For now, we urge our members and supporters nationwide to remain calm, focused, and resolute,” Abdullahi added.

Despite the dispute, ADC reaffirmed confidence in its expanding support base, insisting that recent political developments signal a broader shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.

The latest exchange comes at a time of heightened political activity, with opposition parties repositioning ahead of future elections and increasing scrutiny on the role of key democratic institutions.
