Geography
Kogi State is centrally positioned within Nigeria and is often described as one of the country’s most geographically strategic states. The state lies within the Middle Belt region and is bordered by several states including Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Edo, Ondo, Kwara, and Ekiti, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja).
The state covers a land area of approximately 27,747 square kilometres, consisting largely of wooded savannah and fertile agricultural land.
A defining geographical feature of Kogi State is the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers, which occurs at Lokoja. The Niger River flows southward through the state while the Benue River forms part of its northeastern boundary before joining the Niger.
This location has historically made the area an important center for trade, transportation, and administration.
