Yagba 2027: Mopamuro APC Aspirants Unite Behind Consensus Candidate Amid Third-Term Debate Over Leke Abejide

APC aspirants from Mopamuro LGA agree on a consensus candidate for Yagba Federal Constituency seat amid growing debate over a possible third-term bid by Rep. Leke Abejide.
A group of aspirants from Mopamuro Local Government Area under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have agreed to present a consensus candidate for the House of Representatives seat representing Yagba Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached during a strategic consultative meeting held on March 14, 2026, in Abuja, where the aspirants gathered to deliberate on the political future of Mopamuro within the Yagba Federal Constituency.
Those present at the meeting included Engr. Edward Meseko, Pastor Babagbemi Adesola, Gen. Ben Ipinyomi, Dr. Folorunsho Olafemi and Mr. Seun Ibigbemi.
After extensive discussions conducted in what participants described as an atmosphere of unity and mutual respect, the aspirants unanimously agreed to rally behind a single consensus candidate. The move, according to them, was voluntarily adopted as a demonstration of statesmanship and a shared commitment to advancing the political interests of Mopamuro.
The aspirants noted that presenting a unified front would strengthen Mopamuro’s political position within the constituency while promoting cooperation and stability among party stakeholders.
They also argued that the decision aligns with what they described as the long-standing rotational understanding among communities within the Yagba Federal Constituency, which they said was established by the founding political leaders of the area to promote fairness, balance and political harmony.
However, the development comes amid growing political debate within the constituency over the expected 2027 race and the possible third-term ambition of the current member representing Yagba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Elder Leke Abejide.
There are strong indications that Abejide may seek another term in office, a move his supporters say is justified by what they describe as his significant achievements and developmental interventions across the constituency.
Some political voices in Mopamuro have, however, argued that it should be the turn of their local government to produce the next representative.
Observers within the constituency note that Mopamuro has consistently fielded candidates for the House of Representatives seat over the years, including during previous elections in which Elder Abejide contested. Candidates from Mopamuro had also contested the seat under the platform of the ruling party in earlier electoral cycles.
Political stakeholders across Yagba have therefore urged that the 2027 contest should remain open to all aspirants from the three local governments within the constituency, stressing that democratic competition should not be restricted under the claim of rotational entitlement.
According to some political analysts, fairness and equity within the constituency would be better served by allowing aspirants from all parts of Yagba Federal Constituency to freely test their popularity at the polls rather than presenting the race as the exclusive turn of any particular local government.
Meanwhile, the Mopamuro aspirants at the Abuja meeting reaffirmed their commitment to work collectively in support of the consensus arrangement and pledged their cooperation to ensure its success.
A spokesperson for the group also expressed appreciation to political leaders, party stakeholders and supporters across Yagba and beyond for what he described as their continued encouragement and support.
A group photograph taken after the meeting showed the aspirants standing together, symbolizing the unity and shared resolve that characterized the gathering.
