Kogi State
The Kogi State Government has expressed condolences to the families of six persons who lost their lives in a road crash along the Kabba–Odo-Ape Road in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, while calling on motorists to exercise greater caution on the state’s highways.
The crash, which occurred on Saturday, September 19, 2026, involved a truck and a commercial vehicle. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that six people died in the incident, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The bodies of the deceased were subsequently deposited at the General Hospital, Kabba.
The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, conveyed the condolences of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo to the families and communities affected by the tragedy.
Fanwo said the Governor was saddened by the loss of lives and prayed for the repose of the deceased, while asking God to give their families the strength to cope with the loss.
The FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi State, Lawal Fagge, attributed the crash to speeding and appealed to motorists to desist from excessive speed and unnecessary overtaking. He also warned against driving when fatigued, stressing that responsible driving remains critical to preventing avoidable road crashes.
The incident has renewed concerns over road safety and responsible driving practices on major highways in the state, particularly routes connecting communities within Kabba-Bunu and adjoining areas.
Fanwo urged motorists to observe prescribed speed limits, exercise patience and avoid dangerous manoeuvres that could endanger other road users.
He also called on the Federal Road Safety Corps to intensify enforcement against speeding across Kogi highways, while strengthening public enlightenment, monitoring and other preventive measures designed to discourage dangerous driving.
According to the Commissioner, the government’s call is intended to complement the work of the FRSC and other road safety stakeholders in reducing crashes and protecting lives on the state’s roads.
He urged motorists and other road users to make safety their foremost consideration, noting that reaching a destination should never come at the cost of human life.
The government also wished the two injured victims a full and speedy recovery and appealed to all road users to remain patient, responsible and compliant with traffic regulations.
The latest incident adds to continuing road safety concerns in Kogi, where authorities and road safety agencies have repeatedly urged motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and dangerous overtaking.
