Prince Abubakar Audu University Anyigba security operatives have arrested a 400-level student accused of attempted forced cult initiation, assault and threats to life, as the institution reinforces its zero-tolerance stance against social vices.

Security operatives attached to the Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, have arrested a student suspected of involvement in cult-related activities, following allegations of attempted forced initiation, physical assault and threats to the life of another student.
The arrest was carried out as part of the institution’s intensified efforts to eliminate cultism and other social vices within the university community and its surrounding environment.
According to a statement released by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Uredo Omale, the suspect, identified as Mr. Adejo Elisha Ojonimi, a 25-year-old 400-level student of the Department of Economics with matriculation number 23EC1103, was apprehended on Friday, June 19, 2026, by members of the Vigilante Service.
The arrest followed a complaint from a spill-over student of the Department of Food Science and Technology, who alleged that the suspect attempted to force him into joining a cult group identified as the “Black Axe Confraternity.”
The complainant reportedly informed security authorities that the suspect approached him at his residence around the NTA area behind the university campus and demanded that he become a member of the group.
He alleged that after rejecting the demand, he was physically attacked, injured and threatened with serious consequences if he continued to refuse the initiation.
The victim further stated that the alleged threats forced him to leave his residence and stay away for several days due to fear for his safety before eventually reporting the matter.
Following the complaint, the case was transferred to the university’s Security Unit, where preliminary investigations commenced.
The university disclosed that visible injuries were observed on the complainant during the initial report, while the suspect allegedly admitted to some aspects of the assault and threats during interrogation.
Further checks conducted on the suspect’s mobile device reportedly revealed conversations with individuals believed to be connected to a cult group associated with the slogan “Egede” and linked to the Black Axe Confraternity.
The university stated that information obtained from the investigation, including details of other persons allegedly connected to the matter, has been documented and forwarded for further security assessment and possible administrative action.
The suspect has since been handed over to the relevant security agency for continued investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, commended the security personnel and other stakeholders involved in the operation for their professionalism and commitment.
Professor Usman reaffirmed the institution’s firm position against cultism, violence and criminal activities, stressing that the university would continue to maintain a safe and conducive environment for learning, research and community development.
He warned individuals involved in cult-related activities to stay away from the institution, adding that the university would not tolerate actions capable of threatening the peace and security of students and staff.
The Vice-Chancellor also urged members of the university community, particularly as the second semester examination begins, to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities or movements to the appropriate authorities.
He assured students and staff that all security reports would be handled with confidentiality and seriousness.
The university management reiterated its commitment to sustaining a peaceful academic environment where students can pursue their studies without fear or intimidation.
