APC Primary: Leke Abejide Floors Opponent Across 34 Wards to Clinch Yagba Reps Ticket
Rt. Hon. Leke Abejide secured a sweeping victory in the APC House of Representatives primary election for Yagba Federal Constituency, defeating his challenger across all 34 wards.
Member representing Yagba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Leke Abejide, has emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Yagba Federal Constituency seat after recording a commanding win across all 34 wards in the constituency.
The lawmaker secured an overwhelming mandate from party members during the direct primary election conducted across Yagba East, Yagba West and Mopamuro local government areas, defeating his challenger, Pastor Babagbemi Adejola, by a wide margin.
Results collated from the three councils showed massive support for Abejide as APC members turned out in large numbers to participate in the exercise widely described by stakeholders as peaceful, transparent and credible.
Political observers within the constituency characterized the outcome as a decisive endorsement of Abejide’s leadership and representation, noting that the results reflected the confidence of party members in his grassroots engagement and performance in office.
The primary election witnessed impressive turnout of party faithful across polling centres, with voters queuing openly to cast their ballots in what many described as one of the most successful internal democratic exercises conducted by the party in recent years within the constituency.
Speaking with journalists after the exercise at Takete Ide/Otafun Ward in Mopamuro Local Government Area, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo, commended APC members for the peaceful conduct recorded throughout the process.
According to him, the direct primary election provided party members with the opportunity to freely decide their preferred candidate ahead of the general elections.
“You can see the enthusiasm among party members to participate in the process of selecting candidates for the general elections. The exercise was peaceful, transparent and hitch-free across Mopamuro Local Government Area,” Fanwo said.
He disclosed that Abejide polled 892 votes in Takete Ide/Otafun Ward, while his only challenger secured just two votes, adding that similar voting patterns were recorded across the 10 wards in Mopamuro Local Government Area.
“Our members have spoken clearly and their decision has been respected. We appreciate the peaceful atmosphere maintained throughout the exercise,” he added.
Party stakeholders and leaders in Yagba East also praised the conduct of the primary election, describing the process as orderly and reflective of the growing confidence of APC members in the leadership style of the lawmaker.
Member representing Yagba East State Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Obaro, described the outcome as a reward for effective representation and sustained grassroots connection.
According to him, Abejide’s accessibility and developmental interventions across communities contributed significantly to the massive support he enjoyed during the primary election.
In Yagba West, party leaders said the wide margin recorded in the exercise further demonstrated the unity within the APC and the popularity of the federal lawmaker among party faithful.
One of the party stakeholders noted that the results went beyond ordinary political victory, insisting that the outcome represented the collective voice of the people across the constituency.
“The people have spoken loudly through the ballot. The turnout and results across the wards show that Rt. Hon. Leke Abejide enjoys widespread support because of his performance and connection with the grassroots,” the stakeholder stated.
Party members and observers who monitored the exercise across polling centres also commended the peaceful conduct of supporters, party officials and electoral personnel during the primary election.
The victory is expected to strengthen Abejide’s position as the APC candidate for Yagba Federal Constituency ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
The House of Representatives primary election followed the recent adjustment of the APC timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.
The party had earlier shifted the date for the House of Representatives primary election to Saturday, May 16, 2026.
In a statement issued by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party explained that dates earlier announced for the Senate, State House of Assembly, governorship and presidential primaries remain unchanged.
According to the revised timetable, the Senate primary election is scheduled for May 18, while the State House of Assembly primary will hold on May 20.
The governorship primary election is expected to take place on May 21, while the presidential primary has been fixed for May 23, 2026.
