Kogi Police Launch Investigation into Alleged Extra-Judicial Killing of Nursing Student in Olamaboro

Kogi Police have opened a homicide investigation into the alleged killing of a final-year nursing student, Andrew Amehson Aziko, by security guards in Okpo, Olamaboro LGA.

The has launched a homicide investigation into the controversial death of Andrew Amehson Aziko, a final-year nursing student, following allegations that he was brutally assaulted and shot by security guards in Okpo, Olamaboro Local Government Area.

Aziko, a student of , was reportedly killed in the early hours of April 26, 2026, near the premises of under circumstances that have sparked public outrage and calls for justice.

Initial reports circulating shortly after the incident alleged that the deceased, said to be dealing with mental health challenges, was intercepted by security personnel while attempting to gain access to the school through an unfinished section of its fence. Eyewitnesses claimed he was subjected to severe beating with sticks before he was eventually shot.

Confirming the development in a statement issued in Lokoja, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, disclosed that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) have taken over the case for a comprehensive probe.

According to the police, the matter was first reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters at about 10:30 a.m. on the day of the incident, prompting the immediate deployment of operatives to the scene.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that at about 3:00 a.m., the victim allegedly attempted to unlawfully access the school premises. He was intercepted by security personnel on duty and was reportedly assaulted during the encounter,” the statement said.

“He was later found unresponsive by staff of the institution and rushed to a medical facility, where he was confirmed dead. The scene has since been processed and relevant exhibits recovered to aid ongoing investigations.”

The Command further revealed that the identities of the security personnel allegedly involved have been established, but the suspects are currently on the run.

“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend them for questioning and possible prosecution,” the police added.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, , condemned the use of excessive force and warned against mob justice or unlawful conduct by private security operatives.

He stressed that security guards and vigilante groups are not empowered to mete out punishment under any circumstances, noting that their responsibility is limited to lawful arrest and immediate handover of suspects to the police.

The police assured the public of a thorough, transparent, and professional investigation, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing credible information that could aid the arrest of the fleeing suspects.

The incident has continued to generate reactions across Kogi State, with community members and stakeholders demanding accountability and justice for the deceased.
