The Obaro Representation Effect: The Need for Continuity in Yagba East State Assembly

I write as a wife of Isanlu and a resident who has spent close to a decade observing and studying the political and social developments within Yagba East Local Government Area. Over these years, I have watched closely how representation at the Kogi State House of Assembly has impacted the lives of the people. If representation is ultimately judged by performance and commitment to the welfare of constituents, then Honourable Emmanuel Olusegun Obaro has demonstrated reasons why continuity should be considered.
Within his relatively short period at the Kogi State House of Assembly, Honourable Obaro has distinguished himself through legislative engagements and people-oriented initiatives aimed at improving the living conditions of the people of Yagba East. From moving motions on the floor of the House that address the needs of his constituents to initiating empowerment programmes that directly benefit the people, his representation has reflected a clear focus on development and service.
One of the notable examples of his commitment to his constituency was in May 2025, when he reportedly received ₦15 million as constituency allowance from the state government. Rather than utilizing the funds for personal purposes, he returned to Yagba East and deployed the entire sum to support small businesses and other livelihood initiatives among his constituents.
In response to the growing security challenges in Yagba land, particularly the threat posed by banditry, Honourable Obaro also demonstrated practical leadership by providing support to local security efforts. He donated cash, two Sharon vehicles, and several motorcycles to assist the Local Government Chairman and security operatives in combating criminal activities within the area.
In addition, he facilitated the construction of lock-up shops in the Isanlu axis and parts of Yagba East, creating economic opportunities for traders and small business owners. His interventions have also extended to humanitarian assistance. Recently, he provided financial support to victims of rainstorm disasters and awarded bursaries to students across different levels of education in Yagba East, thereby easing the burden on affected families and encouraging educational advancement.
These and several other initiatives have contributed to the trust and goodwill he currently enjoys among many residents of Yagba East, who believe his representation has brought tangible benefits to the constituency.
It is important to acknowledge that other aspirants interested in the seat, including Ogbeni Sunday Oni David, Ayo Wande Opumulero, Hon. Femi Oju, and others, are also young individuals doing commendable work in their respective fields. Their aspirations reflect the vibrancy of democratic participation within the constituency.
However, considering Honourable Obaro’s performance, achievements, and the level of acceptance he has gained among the people of Yagba East, particularly within Isanlu, there is a growing argument that he should be given the opportunity to complete a second term in office.
Given that the Assembly seat is traditionally associated with Isanlu town, respected community leaders and elders within the Isanlu axis may also play a constructive role in fostering unity and understanding among stakeholders. Leaders such as His Royal Majesty, the Agbana of Isanlu; the Oluagba of Makutu; Chief T.J. Faniyi; Chief Dare Maiyegun; Dr. Williams Akanle; Hon. Mrs. Doyin Ibikunle; Chief Dayo Kayode; Asiwaju Idris Asiru; Chief Dare Olubunmi; Dr. Patrick Ola Daniels; Chief Kayode Orenisi; Ven. Ayo Moses, and other notable figures could convene a dialogue among aspirants to promote consensus, inclusiveness, and fair representation for all interests within the community.
Such engagement could ensure that while continuity is considered, other stakeholders are also assured of inclusiveness and fair participation in governance and development initiatives across the Isanlu axis.
Ultimately, the goal should remain the progress and unity of Yagba East. Leadership and representation must always reflect the collective interest of the people and the continued development of the constituency.
As someone who has lived in and observed the political and social dynamics of Yagba East for over a decade, I believe constructive dialogue, mutual respect, and a focus on the common good will continue to guide the constituency toward greater progress.
Yours sincerely,
Orenisi Oluwatosin Saliu
