Beyond Politics: OJN Foundation Launches Football Talent Hunt to Uncover Kogi’s Next Generation of Stars

In a bold move aimed at deepening youth empowerment and creating opportunities beyond the political space, the Oladele John Nihi Foundation (OJN Foundation) has unveiled the maiden edition of the OJN Football Talent Tournament, a grassroots sporting initiative designed to discover and develop young football talents across Kogi State.
The tournament forms part of activities lined up for the 2026 edition of the OJN Annual Symposium and reflects the Foundation’s growing commitment to youth development through strategic investments in sports, leadership, and human capital development.
According to the organisers, the competition is intended to provide talented young footballers with a platform to showcase their abilities before coaches, scouts, and other stakeholders within the football ecosystem, creating pathways for career advancement at both national and international levels.
The Foundation noted that the initiative goes beyond sports entertainment, describing it as a deliberate intervention aimed at identifying hidden talents, promoting social inclusion, and empowering young people through constructive engagement.
To ensure professional standards and technical excellence, the tournament is being organised in partnership with Anchor Football Academy, a collaboration expected to provide participants with quality mentorship, technical guidance, and exposure to modern football development practices.
Beyond talent discovery, organisers said the competition would promote values such as discipline, teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, and healthy competition among participants drawn from different communities.
The maiden edition of the tournament is scheduled to hold from June 24 to July 11, 2026, at the Confluence Stadium, Zone 8, Lokoja, and is expected to attract hundreds of young footballers, sports enthusiasts, coaches, talent scouts, and football administrators from within and outside Kogi State.
The Foundation expressed confidence that the initiative would evolve into a flagship annual sporting event capable of producing future football stars while contributing to the development of grassroots sports in Nigeria.
Stakeholders have described the tournament as another demonstration of the Foundation’s commitment to providing practical opportunities for young people to realize their potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
With preparations already underway, anticipation continues to build around what many observers believe could become one of the most impactful grassroots football development programmes in Kogi State.
The Oladele John Nihi Foundation reaffirmed its dedication to youth-focused initiatives, emphasizing that investing in the dreams, talents, and aspirations of young people remains central to its vision for sustainable community development and nation-building.
As the countdown to kick-off begins, football lovers across the state are expected to converge in Lokoja to witness what promises to be an exciting showcase of emerging talents and a celebration of the power of sports as a catalyst for transformation.
