People & Culture
Kogi State is one of Nigeria’s most culturally diverse states. The population is made up of several ethnic groups, with the three largest being:
Igala
Ebira (Igbira)
Okun Yoruba
In addition to these major groups, there are other ethnic communities such as Bassa, Nupe, Kakanda, Oworo, Ogori-Magongo, and Gwari, each contributing to the state’s rich cultural tapestry.
The cultural traditions of the people are expressed through festivals, languages, traditional governance systems, music, and crafts. Festivals such as the Ekuechi Festival of the Ebira people highlight the deep historical and spiritual heritage of the region.
Across the state, traditional institutions continue to play important roles in community leadership and cultural preservation.
