ABUJA
The (INEC) has commenced technical processes aimed at restoring 20 state constituencies previously suppressed following court orders, in a move expected to reshape legislative representation in affected states.
The Commission disclosed this in an official communication dated April 30, 2026, from its headquarters in Abuja, indicating that the decision was reached during its meeting held the same day.
According to the document signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Dr. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the constituencies slated for restoration are spread across four states: Kogi (11), Benue (5), Delta (4), and Jigawa (1).
INEC explained that the process will involve extensive stakeholder engagement at state headquarters, alongside fieldwork in the affected constituencies. The exercise is designed to gather critical geographical and demographic data required for the production and validation of constituency maps and other technical documentation.
The Commission has directed Resident Electoral Commissioners in the affected states to liaise with key stakeholders, including traditional institutions, community leaders, and security agencies, to ensure the smooth conduct of the exercise.
They are also expected to provide administrative and logistical support to field teams, ensure adequate security arrangements for personnel and equipment, and nominate qualified officers to collaborate with the technical team from INEC headquarters.
INEC further assured that the exercise would be conducted in a coordinated and transparent manner, with a focus on delivering credible outcomes in line with legal and constitutional requirements.

The restoration of the suppressed constituencies is seen as a significant step towards strengthening democratic representation and addressing longstanding gaps in the electoral structure of the affected states.
